My joy - allow me to say that it is not mine because I authored it. No, my joy is mine by divine design. The joy that I have is not authored by me, but it is hand delivered to me by the grace of the Lord. If it had not been for the Lord I could not have joy, I could not know joy, I could not even spell joy, I could not even begin to attempt to describe this joy – the joy that I have could not be found in any doctor’s prescription, any grocery shelf, it was not handed down to me in anybody’s will – it is from God Himself, but I had to go through some things to know how good it is to have His joy.
Otherwise, I would operate as a spoiled brat with one of the greatest gifts that God has given to mankind. Now, I’m glad I have joy. Now, I’m happy that I have joy. Now, I’m saying “cool beans” that I have joy. Now, I’m happy glad that I have joy. On the other hand, I had to go through some stuff to know how wonderful this joy truly is.
In our text, the Psalmist writes a song of thanksgiving to God for the experiences in life that God has assisted him through. Before I go any further I need to tell us that nobody makes it successfully in this life without the knowledge that God has made everything possible. The Bible declares that it is in Him that we move, we live, we have our being; The psalmist declares if it had not been for the Lord on our side; Nobody makes it successfully without the hand of the Lord being upon you.
The Psalmist declares that there were instances that led to my joy that God was at work.
First off, He was at work when my enemies thought they had me. Look at the text in verse one: “I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.”
The psalmist reminds us, just in case you may not know it – that in this life you will not only collect family members, not only collect friends and acquaintances – but because you are a child of God, you have the potential to acquire enemies or foes.
This text in Hebrew suggests that these are people who are against you just because you’re attached in relationship to God, and in this dispensation, Jesus Christ. There are some people who don’t want you to have anything to do with Jesus Christ, His Church, His Pastor, His praise, His worship, His word, His way, and His will. They would rather you stay as far away from God as possible and that’s why everybody can’t celebrate what God is doing in your life right now.
